SKIN UNDERTONES GUIDE – There is more to your skin you need to know

We all are unique and so are our skins. Be it the skin colour, texture, sensitivity or the overall facial visage. Till date, we all have known skin colours to be categorized as dark, fair, or wheatish. But there is more to it. Our skin undertone is vital to determining the hue of our skin colour. To understand it better, the firmament is always known to be blue, but has different undertones varying through the changing time of the day.  During sunrise, it is an idyllic yellow undertone, while at sunset, it has a flaring orange tone to it. Similarly, during a rainy day and monsoons, metal grey or ash grey is the prominent undertone.

UNDERSTANDING THE SKIN UNDERTONES?

You would understand better about a skin undertone if you have ever worn a lip colour, only to realize that the shade doesn’t suit your face. Even for people with a similar complexion, the same shade of red doesn’t work. Skin undertones are the reason why cosmetic and makeup brands the world over need to come up with a plethora of variations in their ranges.

A skin undertone is the colour beneath the surface of your skin that determines the hue of your skin shade. There are predominantly three undertones – cool, warm and neutral. You might have heard the aesthetician asking you to opt for cooler shades of makeup foundation, blush or lip colour if your skin tone happens to be more inclined towards a cooler hue.

A skin with a cool undertone is the one that has hints of blue, pink and a cherry red hue beneath its surface. These skin types appear to be brighter than the rest. While a warm undertone is denoted by underlying hues of yellow, golden or peachy shades. A neutral undertone is a mix of both the palettes and reflects the skin colour as it is.

Any skin colour is disposed to having any natural undertone. People with fair skin can have warm, cool or neutral tones and the same holds true for complexions varying from ranges of wheatish to dark. Do not be alarmed, but people with a very dark complexion can also have a very cool pinkish undertone to their skin.

Generally, people with a warm tone or a yellow undertone to be precise, might bear paleness to their complexion, despite being fair. Similarly, if someone with a wheatish complexion has a cool undertone, their overall appearance might appear more gaiety and flushed.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT UNDERTONE OF SKIN YOU HAVE?

If you have a basic understanding of colour palettes and which colour family complements what, this should be quite a downhill task for you. Or women who are avid makeup aficionados and believe in patch testing their foundations and lipsticks and running them through swatch tests, you probably know your undertone well by now.

But for the rest, we shall help you get well-acquainted with ways to determine your skin undertones.

For this, you would need to move away from looking at your facial skin and bring down your gaze to the veins on the inner side of your arms and on the insides of your wrist. Look through your skin and notice the colour of these veins. If they appear to be green, your undertones fall under the warm side of the spectrum. If they are of blue or purple hue, then you have cooler undertones.

Knowing your skin undertones really helps with picking the most suitable colour palettes for a lot of things. It is also the key differentiator between achieving the flawless makeup look versus ‘too made-up’ makeup.

Even while choosing what colours look the best on you or which jewellery (gold or silver) complements you the best, it might be a lot helpful to be in the know of your skin undertone.
